    At the heart of CHEP New Zealand's sustainability approach is a commitment to 'do the right thing' for the:

  • Customer

    Customers are showing a growing interest in understanding and tracking the environmental and social impacts of their supply chain.

    There are a number of initiatives that demonstrate CHEP New Zealand's commitment to our customers and their sustainability practices across the supply chain including:

    CHEP value proposition: One CHEP customer had various issues with using a cardboard bin. Issues included;

    • Stacking ability
    • Utilisation of space
    • Waste disposal costs
    • Cost per trip
    • Health and Safety - unsafe stacking

    Utilising CHEP boxes all of the above issues were addressed, along with the benefit of a substantial cost saving.

     CHEP New Zealand is launching a relationship survey program which is designed to help us listen and better understand our customers' needs and pain points. Feedback from this survey will be the foundation of our annual execution priorities in order to drive improvements and have an impact on customer satisfaction.

    Environment

    CHEP New Zealand is committed to working towards Zero Harm - zero environmental damage - by reducing its environmental footprint and using its influence to minimise the footprint of its customers and its supply chain. Our vision is to be a leading green brand providing the best environmental supply chain solutions.

    This includes:

    • Annual reductions in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions
    • Annual improvements in water and waste management
    • Responsible management of lumber resources for CHEP, its suppliers, customers and the wider community
    • Engagement with supply chain participants to ensure their practices are in line with CHEP's environmental principles
    • Ensuring CHEP meets customers' sustainability expectations
    • Timber recycling: "Waste not want not" - CHEP's 'closed loop' timber system: CHEP controls our pallet supply from source right through to disposal. Over 85% of our timber waste is recycled with a target of 100% recycling by 2015
    • Timber sourcing: "Certified forests standard for CHEP": We are currently in the process of obtaining FSC certifications for all timber used in the manufacture of our pallets
    • Energy Efficiency at Service Centres: "CHEP puts energy into reducing emissions": We monitor energy usage at our sites on a monthly basis. Energy audits have recently been completed at various sites in New Zealand.

    People and Safety

    CHEP New Zealand is committed to engaging with its employees, ensuring that the right systems are in place to support them and making sure they are safe.

    CHEP is committed to achieving Zero Harm and considers the health, safety and environment impacts in all its decisions. More about some of the safety practices at CHEP:

    • ACC: CHEP New Zealand has Tertiary level accreditation in the ACC Workplace Safety Management Practices
    • ACC: CHEP received Experience rating discount from ACC due to our good performance within our grouped business unit
    • Our BIFR (Brambles Incident Frequency Rate) has seen a continued reduction over the last 8 years. In the last two years we have reduced BIFR injuries (LTI, AMD and MTI) by over 50%.
